Captain Edwin Arthur Ackerman, Jr.: A Legacy of Bravery and Sacrifice

Born on August 15, 1938, in Oronoco, Minnesota, Captain Edwin Arthur Ackerman, Jr. dedicated his life to service and sacrifice. As a United States Army officer, he embodied the highest traditions of military honor and courage. His journey led him to the frontlines of the Vietnam War, where he served as a Senior Advisor for Mobile Advisory Team IV-37, Advisory Team 68, within the United States Army Advisory Group, IV Corps Tactical Zone, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV).

Tragically, Captain Ackerman was killed in action (KIA) on February 19, 1969, during a fierce engagement in Vinh Long Province, Republic of Vietnam. His heroic actions on that day earned him the Silver Star, one of the nation’s highest awards for valor in combat.

On the night of February 19, 1969, Captain Ackerman was leading an element of the Minh Duc Popular Forces on a patrol near My An Village, Minh Duc District, Vinh Long Province. As they moved through the darkened landscape, the unit suddenly encountered enemy forces. Rather than retreat, Ackerman boldly led his men in pursuit of the withdrawing enemy, showing complete disregard for his own safety.


As the chase continued, the unit became spread out, and the point element was ambushed in a tri-directional firefight. In the chaos, two American advisors were critically wounded.

Without hesitation, Captain Ackerman braved relentless enemy fire to reach the wounded men. After attempting to aid one of them, he picked up the soldier’s radio and began calling for aerial and artillery support, ensuring his troops had the necessary firepower to hold their position.

His courage and leadership inspired the Vietnamese soldiers fighting alongside him, and his swift actions were instrumental in the operation’s effectiveness. Unfortunately, Captain Ackerman made the ultimate sacrifice that night, giving his life in service to his country and his comrades.

For his extraordinary gallantry and selflessness in combat, Captain Edwin A. Ackerman, Jr. was posthumously awarded the Silver Star. His award citation commends his fearless leadership, unwavering dedication, and heroism in the face of overwhelming danger.
