HM2 David R. Ray was serving with Battery D, 2nd Battalion, at Phu Loc 6 near An Hoa when, during the early morning hours, a battalion-sized enemy force launched a fierce assault on the battery's position. The enemy succeeded in breaching the barbed-wire perimeter, and the initial barrage of rockets and mortars inflicted heavy casualties on the Marines who had rushed to their howitzers. Undeterred by the intense enemy fire, HM2 Ray moved fearlessly from parapet to parapet, administering emergency medical aid to the wounded.

Despite being seriously wounded himself while caring for a Marine, Ray refused medical attention and continued his lifesaving efforts. At one point, while bandaging and comforting a wounded Marine, Ray was attacked by two enemy soldiers. He fought back, killing one and wounding the other. Though severely weakened by his injuries, Ray persisted, moving through the heavy enemy fire to reach more casualties. As enemy troops pressed their attack, Ray, facing overwhelming odds and under constant fire, treated the wounded and held off the enemy until he exhausted his ammunition. It was then that he sustained his fatal wounds.

In his final act of heroism, HM2 Ray shielded the Marine he was treating, sacrificing himself when an enemy grenade exploded nearby. His selfless actions saved the life of the wounded Marine. HM2 Ray's unwavering courage, dedication, and heroic spirit inspired the men of Battery D to fight with renewed determination, ultimately helping to repel the enemy.

In recognition of his extraordinary bravery, the USS David R. Ray, a Spruance-class destroyer, was commissioned in 1977, honoring this Medal of Honor recipient. The ship was decommissioned in 2002.
