First Lieutenant Sisler served as the platoon leader and advisor for a Special U.S.-Vietnam exploitation force. While on patrol deep in enemy-held territory, his platoon was ambushed from three sides by a company-sized enemy force. Reacting swiftly, 1st Lt. Sisler rallied his troops, repositioned them to a stronger defensive location, called for air support, and moved among his men to provide encouragement and direction.

Upon learning that two of his men were wounded and unable to make it back to the perimeter, 1st Lt. Sisler braved intense enemy fire to reach them. He began carrying one of the injured men back when enemy fire intensified. After setting his wounded comrade down, he killed three advancing enemy soldiers with his rifle and disabled an enemy machine gun with a grenade. As he brought the wounded soldier to safety, the enemy launched a heavy assault on the left flank, wounding several more of his men.

Understanding the urgent need to prevent an overrun, 1st Lt. Sisler grabbed additional grenades and charged directly into the attacking enemy force, firing his weapon and throwing grenades. His courageous action broke the enemy assault and forced them into retreat. Despite heavy enemy fire, 1st Lt. Sisler continued moving around the battlefield to direct air strikes until he was mortally wounded. His extraordinary bravery and sacrifice earned him the Medal of Honor.
