On May 25, 1971, in Kontum Province, Republic of Vietnam, Major William E. Adams displayed extraordinary bravery while serving as a helicopter pilot. Volunteering for a perilous mission, Major Adams flew a lightly armed helicopter to evacuate three critically wounded soldiers from a small fire base under heavy attack by a sizable enemy force. Fully aware of the numerous antiaircraft weapons surrounding the base and the clear weather providing the enemy a clear view of all approaches, he courageously proceeded with the mission.
As Major Adams approached the base, enemy forces unleashed a relentless barrage of heavy machine-gun fire, rocket-propelled grenades, and small arms. Undeterred, he pressed forward, skillfully directing supporting gunship attacks while maintaining precise control of his helicopter. Despite the intense enemy fire, he successfully landed at the fire base and calmly waited for the wounded soldiers to be loaded onto his aircraft.
During the departure, the helicopter was struck by enemy antiaircraft fire, sustaining severe damage and beginning to descend. Demonstrating exceptional skill and composure, Major Adams regained control of the crippled helicopter and attempted a controlled landing. Tragically, the aircraft exploded and crashed amid heavy enemy fire. For his extraordinary heroism and selfless actions, Major William E. Adams was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
