Private First Class Fred Robert Thorpe served in the United States Army with the 213th Engineer Detachment, part of the 159th Engineer Group under the 20th Engineer Brigade, within the United States Army Vietnam Engineer Command during the Vietnam War.

Fred Robert Thorpe served his country during the Vietnam War, enlisting in the United States Army. He entered service through Regular Military enlistment and began his tour on November 24, 1968. Thorpe held the rank of Private First Class, with a military specialty as an electrician and he was assigned to the 213th Engineer Detachment.
Born on December 10, 1948, Thorpe called California home, with records indicating his enlistment from San Francisco County.
Tragically, during his service, PFC Thorpe experienced a life-ending event on October 9, 1969. His death was attributed to a non-hostile action, officially reported as a suicide or self-inflicted injury.
