Private Thomas Douglas Hardy served with Headquarters Company, 11th Engineer Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, Third Marine Amphibious Force, as a motor vehicle operator.

On October 22, 1968, Vandergrift Combat Base, a U.S. Marine installation at Ca Lu Airfield in Quang Tri Province, RVN, came under attack. The base was hit by twenty-five 130mm enemy artillery rounds in the mid-afternoon, followed by additional rounds after dark. The bombardment resulted in the deaths of three Marines: LCPL James E. McCorkel, SGT Irwin L. Knickerbocker, and PVT Thomas D. Hardy. Nineteen other Americans were wounded, and three Vietnamese civilians also lost their lives in the attack.
