Sergeant Robert Martin Patterson (then Specialist Fourth Class) demonstrated extraordinary bravery while serving as a fire team leader in the 3rd Platoon, Troop B, during an assault on a heavily fortified North Vietnamese Army battalion. When the lead squad of the 3rd Platoon was pinned down by intense automatic weapon and rocket-propelled grenade fire from two enemy bunkers, Sgt. Patterson and two other members of his assault team advanced under heavy fire to neutralize the bunkers with grenades and machine guns.
Noticing that his comrades were under attack from a third bunker supported by enemy gunners in spider holes, Sgt. Patterson, without regard for his own safety and despite warnings from his comrades, charged the enemy position and destroyed it. Exposed to fierce small arms and grenade fire from these bunkers and their interlocking defenses, Sgt. Patterson pressed forward.
In a remarkable display of courage, he singlehandedly destroyed five enemy bunkers with his rifle and grenades, killed eight enemy soldiers, and captured seven weapons. His fearless actions inspired his platoon to renew their assault, ultimately breaking through the enemy's defensive line.
For his dauntless courage, extraordinary heroism, and selflessness in the face of overwhelming danger, Sgt. Robert Martin Patterson was awarded the Medal of Honor.
