Specialist Fourth Class (Sp4c) Gary Wetzel of the 173rd Assault Helicopter Company displayed extraordinary bravery and selflessness, going above and beyond the call of duty. Serving as a door gunner on a helicopter trapped by intense enemy fire during an insertion mission, Sp4c. Wetzel rushed to aid his aircraft commander when two enemy rockets exploded nearby, throwing him into a rice paddy and critically wounding him. Despite severe injuries, including the loss of his left arm and wounds to his right arm, chest, and left leg, he staggered back to his gun-well and resumed firing, providing the only effective cover against the enemy. Overcoming unbearable pain and blood loss, Sp4c. Wetzel held his position and eliminated an enemy emplacement that was inflicting heavy casualties on American forces.
Refusing to prioritize his own life-threatening wounds, he attempted to aid his aircraft commander but lost consciousness from blood loss. Regaining consciousness, he crawled toward his crew chief, who was struggling to move the wounded commander to safety. With unwavering dedication, Sp4c. Wetzel assisted, despite collapsing again from his injuries. For his extraordinary valor and sacrifice, Sp4c. Wetzel was awarded the Medal of Honor.
