Richard A. Anderson served as an Assistant Fire Team Leader with Company E, 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, during combat operations in the Republic of Vietnam. On the early morning of August 24, 1969, Lance Corporal Anderson's reconnaissance team was ambushed by a larger, well-concealed enemy force wielding automatic weapons and machine guns. Despite being severely wounded in both legs and knocked to the ground during the initial attack, Lance Corporal Anderson assumed a prone position and continued to deliver intense suppressive fire, striving to repel the enemy assault.

A short time later, an enemy soldier advanced to within eight feet of the team's position, wounding Anderson a second time. Undeterred, he continued firing relentlessly, even as a fellow Marine treated his injuries. Suddenly, an enemy grenade landed between Anderson and another Marine. Without hesitation, he rolled over the grenade, shielding his comrade and absorbing the full impact of the explosion.

Lance Corporal Anderson's extraordinary courage, decisive action, and selfless sacrifice saved the lives of his fellow Marines and epitomized the highest standards of valor and devotion to duty. For his heroic actions, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
